Acne scarring is a patience problem. The breakouts that caused it may have cleared years ago, but the texture left behind sits in the skin and catches light in a way that makes it hard to ignore in a mirror or a photo. People who come to our Oracle Road office about scarring have usually already tried a shelf of products. Topicals work on the surface. Scar texture is deeper than that.
PRF microneedling is a different approach: create a controlled repair response in the skin, then give that repair your own platelet rich fibrin to work with. Here is how a course of treatment tends to unfold.
Before anything is scheduled
Every client starts with a consultation. Not every kind of acne scarring responds the same way, active breakouts change the plan, and the honest answer for some skin is that a different treatment or a different sequence makes more sense. Stephanie, our provider, will look at the actual texture on your face rather than working from a description over the phone. She is a registered dental hygienist with an AAS from Pima Community College and a BAS from Northern Arizona University, and she began PRF facial esthetics training through the CARE program in 2024.
Session one: the baseline
The visit starts with a small blood draw. That sample spins in the centrifuge while topical numbing goes on and takes effect. No additives and no anticoagulants go into the sample, which is what allows the fibrin to form its natural scaffold and release growth factors slowly instead of all at once.
Then the microneedling pass, then the PRF applied to the freshly treated skin. Expect mild redness for about 24 to 48 hours afterward. Plan the appointment for a day when a flushed face is not a problem.
What changes after one session? Often the first thing people notice is not the scars at all. It is overall smoothness and a brighter look to the skin. Carla Noriega described her first experience this way: "I was a little scared, but Stephanie made sure I was comfortable and explained everything. I didn't feel anything, the whole process was smooth and comfortable."
The weeks between visits
Sessions are spaced a few weeks apart, and that gap is doing real work. Collagen remodeling is slow. If appointments were stacked back to back, you would be interrupting the exact process you paid for. Most clients are looking at 3 to 4 sessions overall.
During those weeks the priorities are simple: sun protection, gentle products, no picking at anything. Our full PRF aftercare guide covers the first 48 hours and the longer stretch in more detail.
Session two: the one where the pattern shows
By the second appointment you and your provider have something useful, a record of how your skin actually responded. That informs depth and approach for this round. Many people find the second session easier mentally simply because the unknown is gone. You know what the numbing feels like, you know what the redness looks like the next morning, and you can plan around both.
Texture change tends to be gradual and cumulative rather than dramatic. Cristobal Mireles came in after researching the treatment on his own and wrote: "She was very knowledgeable and skilled... I was able to see an improvement on my skin and acne after the first visit! Have gotten several compliments on how I'm 'glowing' now."
Sessions three and four: the stack
This is where a full course earns its keep. Each round of needling and PRF builds on the collagen laid down by the last one. What people describe at this stage is usually about how the skin catches light, indirect lighting and photographs being the test most of us apply without thinking about it.
A fair caution: no one can promise you a specific outcome. Scars differ in depth and type, skin heals at different rates, and anyone quoting you a percentage improvement before they have seen your face is guessing. What we can tell you is what the protocol is and what most clients experience.
Tucson specifics worth planning for
Our dry desert air works against skin that is recovering. Dehydrated skin shows texture more, and post treatment skin holds moisture less well for a few days. Drink more water than feels necessary, keep a bland moisturizer handy, and be serious about sunscreen. Sun exposure on freshly treated skin is the single easiest way to undo your own progress.
Our hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, which means a mid morning appointment gives you the rest of the day out of direct afternoon sun. We are closed Saturday through Monday.
