The under-eye area is the first place most people point to when they say they look tired. It is also the area where the fewest good options exist. The skin there is thinner than anywhere else on the face, there is very little fat to cushion it, and a hollow that develops in your thirties tends to stay.

PRF injections are one approach to that specific complaint, and the thing that separates them from most alternatives is the material: there is no synthetic product involved at all.

What is actually being injected

PRF is made from a small draw of your own blood. The sample goes into a centrifuge, which separates out a fibrin rich layer packed with platelets. No additives, no anticoagulants. Because nothing is added to prevent clotting, the fibrin forms a natural matrix, and that matrix releases growth factors gradually rather than dumping them at once.

So when your provider injects PRF under the eye, the goal is not to inflate the area with a foreign substance. It is to place your own growth factors where you want the skin to rebuild, and let the rebuilding happen over the following weeks.

Hollows and shadows are not the same problem

This distinction matters and it is why we insist on a consultation before treatment. Some under-eye darkness is a true shadow cast by a hollow where the cheek meets the lower lid. Some of it is thin, crepey skin letting the color beneath show through. Some of it is pigment. Some is a mix.

PRF is used at our clinic for under-eye hollows and fine lines, along with cheeks, nasolabial folds and the jawline. What it does not do is remove pigment or fix a structural issue that never came from volume loss in the first place. A provider who looks at your face can tell you which category you are in. A blog post cannot.

The appointment

Plan on 45 to 60 minutes. That includes the draw, the spin, and the placement. Most clients do 2 to 3 sessions, and visible change typically shows up in the 2 to 4 week range after treatment rather than the same afternoon. That lag is the tradeoff of a regenerative approach: nothing is being added for instant volume, so the result arrives on your body's schedule.

If instant volume is what you are after, the PRF bio filler approach is worth asking about. It uses the same blood draw, but the PRF is heated into a gel that provides volume right away while collagen builds underneath over the following weeks. Same source material, different behavior.

The comfort question

Nobody looks forward to a needle near the eye. It is the most common hesitation we hear, and it is a fair one. What we can tell you is how clients describe the experience with Stephanie, our provider. Carla Noriega wrote: "I was a little scared, but Stephanie made sure I was comfortable and explained everything. I didn't feel anything, the whole process was smooth and comfortable. Stephanie's clinical background is in dental hygiene. She earned an AAS from Pima Community College in 2009 and a BAS from Northern Arizona University in 2011, and started PRF facial esthetics training through the CARE program in 2024. Delicate work in a small field is the job description of a hygienist, and clients tend to notice.

Living in the desert does not help your under-eyes

Tucson's dry air is hard on thin skin. Dehydration makes fine lines under the eye more visible, and the crepey quality people complain about is often worse in the dry stretch of spring than after monsoon humidity arrives. Hydration and texture treatments are genuinely more relevant here than they would be in a wetter climate, which is one reason PRF work is in demand in this part of town.

Setting expectations honestly

A few things we will say out loud at your consultation:

  • Results build over weeks, not hours. If you have an event next Friday, this is not the treatment for that week.
  • Two or three sessions is the usual plan, so budget your time accordingly.
  • Nobody can guarantee a specific outcome in an area this individual.
  • If your darkness is mostly pigment, we will tell you, rather than sell you a treatment aimed at something else.
